GEOL 3410 - Mineralogy


(4) Credit Hours

Crystallography, descriptive and determinative mineralogy, mineral chemistry, and methods of chemical analysis. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to characterize and identify common minerals in hand specimen, recognize the importance of chemical composition, bonding, and atomic structure on mineral properties, interpret and articulate the genesis of common minerals, apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to evaluation of mineral data, and explain the importance of minerals to society. Mandatory field trips. Fall semesters. Lecture 3 hours, laboratory 2 hours. Prerequisites: A previous 3-4 credit hour course in geology (excluding GEOL 2100) or Department Head approval. Pre or Corequisites: CHEM 1110 /CHEM 1110L   or Department Head approval. Laboratory/studio course fee will be assessed.
