NURS 3560 - Psychiatric Nursing

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in psychiatric-mental health nursing, preparing students to understand the concepts and principles underlying evidence-based care for clients experiencing mental health disorders across the lifespan and in diverse healthcare settings. Through an integrated approach that combines interactive lectures, case-based learning, detective-style diagnostic reasoning activities, group assignments, and reflective exercises exploring stigma and barriers to mental health care, students will actively engage with complex psychiatric concepts while developing critical thinking skills, analytical abilities, and a commitment to advocacy for psychiatric healthcare reform. By the end of this course, learners will demonstrate competency in applying psychiatric nursing concepts, analyzing mental health assessment data, planning appropriate nursing interventions, understanding interprofessional collaboration, and articulating patient-centered approaches that promote recovery and optimal functioning for individuals with psychiatric health disorders while delivering culturally competent care. Fall and Spring semesters. Lecture 3 hours. Prerequisites: Completion of the following courses with a C or higher: NURS 3150, NURS 3155, NURS 3160, NURS 3165, NURS 3170 or Accelerated BSN or Associate Dean approval. Corequisites: NURS 3300, NURS 3550, NURS 3555, NURS 3565 or RN-BSN major or Accelerated BSN major or Associate Dean approval. Open to Nursing majors only. Differential course fee will be assessed.
